The Big Bad Mouse, The Gruffalo And The Myth Of The Alpha Male!

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed watching The Gruffalo one Christmas.

Let me be clear here, I don’t usually sit and watch children’s films but this came on right after another programme had finished and before I had chance to turn it off, I found myself engrossed.

The Gruffalo is the story of a little mouse which is walking through the woods when it is approached by an owl, a fox and a snake who all want to eat it.

This plucky little mouse – which is at the bottom of the food chain – manages to talk his way out of being eaten by scaring these alpha predators into believing that he is on his way to meet with his friend, the big and ferocious Gruffalo.

Neither of the owl, fox or snake have heard of the Gruffalo – it sounds made up and as you watch the film you think it is.

But somehow, the little mouse manages to convince the predators that the Gruffalo is his friend and that he loves nothing more than eating food made of snake, owl and fox, and if he were to be harmed the Gruffalo would come looking for them.

The little mouse is left to continue on his merry way until… he comes face to face with an actual Gruffalo.

Like all alpha-predators, the Gruffalo sees the little mouse as food and wants to eat him. But, the mouse quickly and calmly tries to convince the Gruffalo that he – the  mouse – is actually the most feared animal in the woods.

At first the Gruffalo doesn’t believe him, after all, how can something so small be so feared?

The mouse convinces the Gruffalo to follow him into the woods so that he can show him.

The mouse soon happens across the owl, the snake, and the fox again. Only this time, standing behind the little mouse is the large ferocious Gruffalo which they had come to fear only minutes earlier.

Seeing this large monster-like creature, the owl, the snake and the fox soon cower in fear and quietly slip away.

The Gruffalo doesn’t know that the owl, the snake and the fox were actually scared of him and is surprised to see them scurry off fast as soon as the mouse approaches them.

Now convinced that the mouse is indeed a scary animal and one to fear, the Gruffalo decides to not eat him and walks away leaving the mouse to continue on his merry way.

What I love about this story is that it shows how both brains and communication is far superior to brawn.

In a world where muscles are still admired and the alpha-male and alpha-female are seen as being ‘all powerful’, the Gruffalo puts that notion nicely to bed.

The truth is, alphas are fine when doing alpha things, whatever that is, but have you noticed how cult leaders, politicians and serial killers are often weedy little whatnots who look like they cannot rip open an envelope let alone have power over another free willed and free thinking human?

And yet they very often do.

The power and the fear they have over other people is often implied… or executed by other people who are also under their spell.

So, what am I getting at here?

The little mouse in the Gruffalo implied his power through communication.

He used words to convince the owl, the snake and the fox that he was friends with a large creature which would eat them if they harmed him.

He used words to suggest to the Gruffalo that he was incredibly feared and then used the ‘fear’ the other animals expressed when they saw the Gruffalo standing behind the mouse, as proof to his power.

It was all down to communication and the power of words.

In the second Gruffalo film, The Gruffalo’s Child, the mouse once again has to imply how powerful he is to prevent the Gruffalo’s child eating him.

He tells the young Gruffalo about another big monster living in the woods who will soon appear and that she should look into a large bush for it.

Standing on a branch in front of a bright full moon on a dark winter’s night, the mouse casts large shadows across the snow making him appear like a huge monster with big sharp teeth scaring the Gruffalo’s child who promptly runs away.

The truth is, he was just a little mouse. He always was and always will be.

However, he commanded the respect of the larger alpha predators who left him alone because they feared an idea of who they thought he was. An idea he had created through the use of carefully crafted words.

Words are incredibly powerful, when used correctly, they can build empires and they can generate a lot of money… and you do not need to scare people into it either.

Skinny weaklings can dominate the business world over alphas and bullies by using simple communication and psychology.

There are many alphas strutting around who cannot rub two pennies together and yet there are many non-alpha types, who are incredibly successful in business.

It is through communication how I and many others make millions of pounds. By writing sales copy which communicates directly to people in a way very few alphas can.

With the use of words, I can open hearts, eyes and wallets.

And what is really important to understand is that it really isn’t that hard to do and anyone can learn how to be an alpha of the communication world.

You want more money and more freedom… am I right?

I believe that you do, hence why you signed up for my book How To Stop Working And Make A Million Pounds Instead

*If you do not have your own copy of my book, go to Make A Million Free Book Offer to instantly download a digital copy.

With that in mind, I am going to share with you a very powerful and profitable tip… actually, you can call it a business plan.

What I am going to share with you has changed the lives of a lot of people. It has turned ordinary people into very successful and incredibly wealthy individuals.

Doing what I am about to share with you has opened up doors to new opportunities, new income streams and new ways of living.

So what is it that I am talking about…?

Writing A Book.

‘OVER 30,000 COPIES SOLD AT £19.95!’

Before you start saying things like ‘I don’t know how to write a book’ … or ‘I cannot write a book’ … or ‘I don’t know anything worth writing about’, I am going to stop you and say ‘yes… yes you can’.

You see, writing a book today is incredibly easy and affordable. A few years ago, to keep the costs down, I had to order a huge number of books to be printed which still required quite a bit of initial outlay.

Fortunately, you no longer need to do that today.

Why should you write a book?

Well for a start, they can generate a lot of money.

The book which I now give away – the one which you requested for free – has sold over 30,000 copies at £19.95… you don’t need a calculator to tell you that that is a lot of money… it’s over £500,000.

Secondly, having your name and picture on a book gives you expert status which means a lot of people will turn to you as an expert. People see your book, they see your name and picture and perceive you as a person who knows their stuff

When that happens, you can be asked to give interviews or approached to do paid work such as consultancy or give expert opinions on a subject.

For example, have you ever watched a TV programme about a serial killer and wondered how certain psychologists and criminologists get booked to be part of the show talking about the crime and the killer?

It’s highly likely that they have published books in those fields and so when the TV show does a quick search, their books and names pop up. Books open up doors.

Another great thing about writing your own book is that you can give them away as a lead magnet to grow a list of potential clients. A list of people who you can mail or email can be incredibly profitable,

It is a business model which gives a person a lot of freedom. An email list – if nurtured correctly – can grow to become your very own cash machine.

When selling your book or giving it away to build a list of potential clients, it can be either a physical book or it can be a digital eBook. If you choose to give away a digital version then there is no printing costs involved and the delivery costs are non existent.

‘When the text first went online, I truly didn’t expect a single order for the £29.95 product. But within an hour, nearly 100 people ordered it! And within a day or so, more than 600 people invested their money for it. And as of this writing, about three months later, my e-book produced more than $45,000 – and the orders keep coming.’ –  Joe Vitale, co-author of How To Write And Publish Your Own eBook In As Little As 7 Days

As I said earlier, it is not that hard to write a book today. In fact it can be done very quickly and cheaply. And if you don’t believe me…. I am going to share with you a video where Andi – resident Streetwise writer and content creator – shows you how you can write a book easily and for free.

If you find typing difficult or the idea of writing thousands of words daunting, then this video will be a real eye-opener for you. Andi shows you how to write a book without typing.

You can watch this video here:

‘Within two months he (David Garfinkle – copywriter) made $35,000 in sheer profit. (Note that I said SHEER PROFIT)’ –  Extract taken from How To Write And Publish Your Own eBook In As Little As 7 Days by Joe Vitale & Jim Edwards

There are literally thousands of these kinds of testimonials and anecdotal stories I can share with you… writing your own books could be seriously life changing… even if you don’t make the equivalent to a year’s wage in the first week.

I am more than certain that you know enough about a subject to write a book. If you don’t, do you want to know the fastest way you can find the information for your own book?

Read a couple of books in the topic you want to write about and then by the time you have finished reading you will know as much about the topic as the people who wrote those and published books.

If you know the same amount of information as a book which has been published then you know enough to publish your own book.

How To Turn £20:39 Into Thousands Of Pounds While Enjoying A Refreshing Walk

Okay, this idea is slightly different to all of the previous ideas I have shared with you in the past… but I think it has a lot of potential.

A LOT of potential.

I have been thinking a lot about ways for people to make money which requires little expense and little work… especially technical work.

Not everyone wants to spend hours creating products, building websites, regularly posting on social media and managing costly online adverts… not only does it sound like a lot of hard work… it is.

People want something which is simple… and I think this is possibly one of the simplest business ideas around.

This idea involves promoting other people’s products.

Products which:

  • Are already made.
  • You will never need to touch.
  • Which come with quite a hefty price tag and…
  • Which the owners are happy to pay you 50% or more of that hefty price.

And for this, you will need to spend £20:39… and go for a walk.

To make this work you will need to join either (or both) JVZoo and Clickbank.

JVZoo and Clickbank are two popular affiliate network websites which list hundreds of ready-made products where the owners will pay you commissions of half of the sale price or more.

Search the market place for products which you wish to sell, get an affiliate link for that product, pretty the link up using a link shortener like Bitly, TinyURL or Rebrandly so that it is readable, then pop over to Bizay.co.uk and order 1,000 postcards for the incredibly low price of £20:39.

The postcards will need designing but that is going to be easier than you might think.

You simply go back to the sales page of the product you are promoting, copy the headline and some of the important information from the sales letter, add your new URL details with a call to action such as ‘Learn More Here’ and you are basically good to go.

Get Bizay to print off the postcards and wait for them to be delivered. (There may be a postage cost to factor in to this too.)

Once you have your postcards, go for a walk and then slide the cards under windscreen wipers on cars, pin them to notice boards, and leave them on cafe tables.

Now, the take up could be really low here, which is why you should promote products which are expensive. If you make just one sale out of that 1,000 postcard blitz for a product which is priced at £1,997 and you get 50%… you have made a great profit.

Even if you promoted a product which was priced at just £100 and you made one sale with a 50% commission, you have doubled your money.

Spend that money on getting more cards printed and go again.

With this business method, you can also contact local businesses and ask if you could promote their services and products for a commission and tell them that you will stand the advertising costs.

If it’s going to cost them nothing to have their company advertised to the local population, you may get one or two businesses taking you up on the offer.

Yes, some people frown upon this kind of advertising as they see it a little intrusive. If you are one of those people then you may fear doing it but should that put you off?

If it costs just £20:39 to have 1,000 postcards made promoting a high priced golf product and you placed them on cars parked at a golf club… do you not think one or two people may be interested in taking a look at the product?

One of the things I like about this idea is that this method goes back to the roots of putting adverts firmly into people’s hands.

The online world is crowded with adverts all competing with one and other to be seen. And with so many adverts flashing on websites, people have mentally switched off.

People have become blind to a lot of online adverts because they are exposed to so many.

Studies show that on average, a person sees between 6,000 and 10,000 adverts online… every single day.

That is a lot.

And that is why a lot of people now use advert blocking software to prevent ads from showing on their devices.

You can’t block a postcard!

Postcards are tactile.

You see and feel them.

You hold them in your hands and your flip them over.

They stop you in your tracks and pull you out of your thoughts.

When you see something placed on your windscreen under a wiper, what do you do?

You go and remove it. That involves touching it and looking at it.

And now, thanks to everyone having a smartphone or tablet to hand, they can check out the website there and then. There is no waiting until you were at home sitting at the big old bulky computer like the old days.

Even better if you can add a Q code which directs people to the sales letter without needing to type out the web address. People simply point their phone camera lens at the code and they are then automatically taken to the website.

This business idea is a meeting of the two schools of technology.

Using traditional printed postcards utilising smartphone technology to send people to affiliate products online.

Plus, you get a nice exercising walk in the fresh air. What’s not to love about that?

It’s perfect if you have a dog you need to walk. Take a shoulder bag crammed with postcards out with you and pop them through doors and leave them on tables.

At £20:39, is it not worth a try?

I think the most important part of this is choosing the right product and choosing the best places to put your cards. Get that right and you could possibly earn quite a lot of money with this.

Bizay also print beer mats, flyers, business cards and stickers. All at decent prices.

Some online printers such as Vista print offer to print so many for free as part of promotional campaigns. If you take advantage of those kinds of deals, you can get quite a lot of promotional material for free… and if they are selling high ticket items, then you could be on to a real winner.

Does that sound like something which could interest you?

Kind Regards

John Harrison

PS… Postcards are small, there is only so much room to work with so you’ll need to create the best message possible. Communicating your message correctly is vital and to do that, you’ll need to know which words turn people into emotional buyers and which repel people.

The choice of words you use can make or break a sale. If you want to learn how to turn people into buyers and generate a lot of money using nothing more than words, go to:

Make How To Videos

When I got stuck recently, trying to remove the bracelet on a watch, I went on to YouTube and quickly found several videos demonstrating how to do it. Some were awful, but the best was pretty good and had attracted several thousand views. Now this was a fairly obscure thing to be looking for, and yet several thousand people had done the same thing – and all those people would have something in common – they owned the same watch.

That’s the nature of online instructional videos – they attract audiences who share a problem, possessions or an enthusiasm. In other words, they’re a ready made audience for what you or someone else has to sell.

If you have a skill or expertise (and as I’ve just shown that can be as mundane as knowing how to remove a bracelet from a watch) you could build an audience and make money providing online instruction. You don’t need any expensive equipment – the most basic of video cameras is more than capable of doing the job.

This is one of those opportunities you can have a go at in your spare time, and it will cost you nothing to do. Why not film your own ‘how to’ video, and see how many people go to see it? If nothing else, it will provide valuable market research.

Make-A-Movie Parties

If you have young children, you’ll know that they’re always on the look-out for the next cool party venue or theme. This one that we found in the United States, seems to fit the bill perfectly, and we haven’t seen anything like it here in the UK.

Make-A-Movie Birthday Parties is a self-explanatory concept. The company arrive at the party with a pre-written script, costumes and camera equipment. Roles are allocated, the film is shot and then edited over the next week or so when it is delivered to the person holding the party. Revenue comes from both the booking fee and sales of the movie to party guests.

This seems like something you could copy anywhere. I’d imagine it would be incredibly popular. Equipment is cheap these days and the editing technology is at the hands of anyone with a PC. If you fancy yourself as the next Speilberg, but the lack the budget, this could be something for you.

The Commuting Butchers

If you ever find yourself bemoaning the fact that you can’t find the expertise or help locally consider the case of the Icelandic meat trade. So desperate are they for skilled staff that every September Icelandic meat processors pay the flights and accommodation of 12 butchers to make the 13,850 mile trip from rural New Zealand to a remote corner of Iceland so that they can cover for the peak lamb processing season.

Looking at it from the other side of the coin, if you ever find yourself complaining that there’s ‘no work’ consider the lengths to which these New Zealanders are going, so they can continue to put food on the table in a slack period for their trade at home.

It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, and inspiring to see both employer and employed going the extra mile (well over 13,000 of them!) to keep the wheels turning.

Have you even gone a fraction of this effort to give or find work? I know I haven’t.

Where Should Home Be

If you can work from home, one question you should be asking yourself is- “Where should home be?” Why is it important? Because your decision will have a huge impact on your lifestyle and wealth.

Most people who work from home are able to do it by virtue of the internet. An organisation called NomadList has combined data on internet speed, the cost of rental housing and food, local weather conditions including air quality and other factors to come up with a useful list of the best cities in which to live and work remotely. With living costs in some cities being ten times those on other cities with identical internet speed, it makes thought-provoking reading for anyone working from home.

Making Furniture From Graffiti

I’ve always thought that graffiti is such a waste of effort. Much of the artwork is excellent, and yet there’s nothing you can do with it and it gets covered up or removed at the first opportunity. An Israeli-based design studio has decided to do something about it, and created Street Capture which turns wood painted on by anonymous graffiti artists into contemporary furniture.

The project fixed wooden boards in areas frequented by graffiti artists, waited until they’d done their work, and then picked them up, cut them up and re-fashioned them into pieces of furniture. One slightly questionable part of this is that they didn’t tell the graffiti artists what they were doing. I suppose how you feel about that depends on how you feel about people daubing paint where they shouldn’t!

Anyway, might this work in the UK, or is there some other way of capturing and harnessing the work of what are sometimes very talented artists?

Wine In A Pouch

Sometimes, you need to do no more than re-package a product to change the appeal and target market. For example, two American companies, Nuvino and Spotwine, are now re-packaging premium wine in convenient juice-style pouches in single servings. The idea is that it makes the product more accessible for busy unattached consumers.

This is thinking which can be applied to a lot of different products. What would happen if it was made available in smaller quantity, or in more user friendly or easily disposable packaging? Give some thought to how this might apply to your product, or indeed someone else’s product. It may be possible to steal a slice of the market by varying the appeal and offering in this way.

Washing Up For Food

I think everyone has heard of the old adage about ending up washing the dishes when you can’t pay for food, but a restaurant in France has turned it into reality. Primarily as a publicity stunt, a French washing liquid brand has created the Mir Restaurant, which is charging customers in the form of dishwashing tasks, instead of money.

Customers can order items from a set menu, including starters, mains and desserts. Rather than listing the prices, however, each dish had an icon next to it indicating what each customer would have to wash up in order to pay for the meal.

Now although this is a marketing stunt, designed to promote washing up liquid, it does prompt a few question:

Could you really get some customers to pay for their food in return for work like this?

Moving away from restaurants, are there other businesses where it would be mutually advantageous to get customers to pay in some way other than by cash?

The ‘paying by washing the dishes’ idea comes from an old adage. Are there other old adages that could be brought to life for publicity purposes in this way?

Delousing For Profit

The craze for selfies, which every self-respecting child and teenager is currently participating in, has created an unusual and unexpected side-effect – head lice are spreading at an alarming rate. The lice spread by contact-contact which is more prevalent than ever as kids squeeze together to get in the latest at-arms-length shot.

Now here’s the thing-treatments and remedies are unregulated and desperate parents will happily hand over large quantities of their hard earned money in exchange for a solution. The Lice Centre, based in Connecticut in the US charge $200-$500 for a house call. They now have 10 employees in 14 states. Turnover is in the millions.

Is this something you could do here in the UK? It’s not the most glamorous business in the world, but those yielding the biggest profits rarely are.

They Come Nature

There’s nothing new about mobile hairdressing, but a New York firm has brought it into the 21st Century. Shortcut is an on-demand service that goes to where the customers is.

Service users provide their name, number and e-mail address and select the service they need – whether it’s a trim, a full haircut or a shave. After booking a time slot, the service then sends a professionally trained barber or stylist to their home, office or hotel room.

Users can book an appointment for up to four people at a time, and the more in their group, the cheaper each haircut becomes. Shortcut is currently available in New York, as an iOS app.

The difference between this service and the traditional mobile services is the use of modern technology and the immediacy – I need a haircut and I need it now!

With people becoming increasingly time stressed, this approach is likely to find a market.

So could you bring it to the UK?

Or thinking more widely, what other time consuming services would people appreciate being given a ‘we-come-to-you-now’ twist?

Information Publishing

Information publishing is one of the most heavily promoted ways to make some extra money, and yet many people aren’t really clear on what it is.

Put simply, an information product is any piece of knowledge that has been recorded in some way – whether that be in a printed format, an audio format, or a video format – so that it can now be passed on to others.

There are dozens of ways to package and sell information. Some of the most common products are, printed books and e-books, booklets and special reports, manuals and workbooks, CDs, downloadable audio files, DVDs, newsletters, subscription-based web sites, workshops and seminars.

All of us have information or knowledge that would be useful to others, and packaging and marketing it in the right way can be highly lucrative. If you have an idea for an information product, and want a second opinion on it, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The Cleaning Fairy

Police in the US said that a woman they dubbed a real-life “cleaning fairy”, broke into a house and a left a bill for the housework she did. According to police, the woman entered the residence while homeowner Mallory Bush slept, did some light cleaning and then left a bill for $75 on a napkin before leaving. Unfortunately for the “cleaning fairy,” crime didn’t pay and she was arrested.

Now obviously you can’t go breaking into houses. Nor can you force work or products on people and then charge them. But if you can find a way to ethically give your potential customers a ‘free sample’ of what you sell or what you do, it could be a great source of new business. I’ve experimented with this by giving away free books, and people really seem to appreciate it and respond well.

Groove Book

Brian and Julie Whiteman founded photo sharing and printing app GrooveBook in 2012. A year later they appeared on Shark Tank, the American version of Dragons Den and in November 2014, announced a deal to sell to Shutterfly for $14.5 Million after attracting over a million subscribers. I mention it for three reasons.

Anyone who tells you there’s no such thing as ‘Get-Rich-Quick’ hasn’t heard the story of GrooveBook.

It’s a demonstration of the power of something we’re always going on about here – monthly subscription marketing.

It’s a great concept and a great product, delivery of which isn’t available here in the UK yet.

So something to learn from, take inspiration from and maybe even copy perhaps?

Goldfish Tea Bags

Sometimes a product becomes so commonplace in its generic form that we stop thinking about it at all, and the humble tea bag falls into that category. In recent years, tea companies have really gone out on a limb (well not really) by creating round, triangular and pyramid shaped bags, but now a Taiwan company really has done something different.

Charm Villa has created tea bags designed to look like a goldfish. When placed in hot water, the colours of the leaves in the tea bag show through and resemble the patterns of goldfish scales. It’s a novelty of course, but it does serve to differentiate the companies tea bags from everything else on the market.

If you’re in a market where nobody really thinks about the physical characteristics of the product, you could gain a big competitive advantage by creating something which is cosmetically fresh while serving essentially the same function.

Become A Micro-Tasker

Making some extra money from home, or indeed becoming full time self-employed, need not always mean starting your own business. If you have a skill or series of skills, sites like www.fiverr.com offer you the opportunity to market yourself to individuals and companies looking to outsource some of their requirements.

So what sort of work can you get on Fivver? Well copywriting, editing, design work, computer programming, cover creation, survey filling and data entry are just a few of the categories on offer. There are literally hundreds of different opportunities and there’s no reason why you should stick to just one. Some micro taskers do this full time and can easily clear several hundred pounds a week. Bear in mind that there are no set up costs or long term commitments. You can do everything from home.

Whether you’re looking for a full time opportunity of a bit of spare cash, this has to be worth a look.
