In January 1977, James Callaghan was Prime Minister of The UK, Elvis Presley was still alive and kicking and Red Rum was set to win his third Grand National. My name is John Lee. I’m 79 years old now and enjoying a very nice retirement on the English Riviera in Devon. But back in the mid 1970’s I was a thirty-something family man, struggling to balance the demands of a fledgling business (I was an electrical engineer) and a young family.
The business really wasn’t going very well at the time…it picked up later, but that’s another story…and so I started looking around for a way to boost an income which was falling way short of meeting my commitments.
I’d been interested in betting, dating right back to my teenage years when I’d worked as a ‘runner’ for a local bookmaker, taking bets from the factory workers where I was serving my apprenticeship. But I’d never really done anything with it, other than to place a few lazy punts.

Just a tannoy you strained to hear and some chalked up numbers on a board. Any information on the races being run came from the Sporting Chronicle or the morning paper.
Becoming well-informed was hard. Impossible even. Is it any wonder that the bookies had a massive edge and hardly anyone won regularly? Not really!
So why am I telling you all this?
Because against all the odds (literally!) I became a regular winner. And it was all thanks to a system that I figured out for myself over a period of about 18 months. Once perfected, it stood me in good stead (bar some minor tweaks I’ll tell you about later) for the best part of half a century.
Take a look at this letter. You’ll see he refers to The Rainbow System. (That’s what I called my system.) I’d been banned and asked if I could place other bets outside of the system, but he was having none of it!
The letter is dated 5th January 1978 and is from one of the bookmakers I was using back then. He had four shops, including one in Alton, Hampshire which was an area I visited regularly on business. As you’ll see, he’s writing to say he doesn’t want my business, acknowledging I was “too clever” for him.
I can’t say I blamed him. By the time he sent that letter and banned me, I’d taken them for £6,497. That might not sound a lot today, but it was in 1978. I just checked and it equates to £43,000 in today’s money.
And that was just one bookmaker. At the time, I was spreading my money around both small independents and the big chains like Ladbrokes, Tote, William Hill, Mecca and Surrey Sports. I kept copies of the winner’s cheques as they came in…£800…£252.80…£686.50…£2,065.85, £1227.43, £4,500. Don’t forget, these were big sums of money back then.
And I made the most of it!
From being skint I suddenly had money in my pocket. I bought myself a brand-new Daimler Sovereign and drove it everywhere. This didn’t go unnoticed, not least of which by the Inland Revenue who hauled me in to explain why I appeared to be living way beyond my means.
Fortunately, I’d hung on to copies of the winner’s cheques, together with an ever-growing pile of “We don’t want your business any more” letters from bookmakers, and they sent me on my way – no doubt telling friends and family that they’d met a bloke who was beating the bookies at their own game.
I just found the letter my accountant sent to me, returning all the evidence of my winnings I’d compiled for the Inland Revenue.
And so it went on for a while, but then a combination of circumstances caused me to shelve my winning system.
The list of bookmakers who would accept my bets was growing ever shorter, and conversely, the amount of time I needed to devote to getting my bets on grew ever longer.
At the same time, my business was at last starting to become more lucrative (I actually helped design the first post code recognition and letter sorting machines for the Post Office) and with three children about to go to University, betting became something I put on the back burner. Yes, I used the system from time to time, as and when I could, but it became more of a hobby than a serious money-making enterprise.
Fast forward to the end of the 2000’s and things had changed…
I’d retired and found myself with a lot more time on my hands. And the betting landscape had changed beyond recognition. The smoke-filled bookmaker’s shops and stubby pencils were chiefly gone, and replaced with a comfy seat at home with access to dozens of bookmakers and more information than anyone could comfortably take in.
And I was loving it!
I set up accounts with several of the major online bookmakers and picked up where I’d left off in the 80’s…using the system ‘systematically’, regularly and professionally.
They say history repeats itself. And it did in two ways…
- I started winning significant sums of money on a regular basis.
- One by one, the bookies closed me down!
I won’t bore you with all their letters. The one from Ladbrokes was typical…
Between 2011 and 2013 Ladbrokes, Boyle Sports, Stan James, Victor Chandler and Paddy Power wrote to me, either banning me altogether or restricting my bets to the point where it was no longer financially viable.
By this stage in my life, the financial need wasn’t that strong, I had other interests to pursue and The Rainbow System went on the back burner again…
And then two or three years ago, I had an idea…the only thing that had stopped me all these years was resistance from bookmakers.

There are just six factors to look out for, and if a horse complies with all six, it’s a bet. If it falls short any of the six, it isn’t.

Nothing unusual or extraordinary there, in fact pretty average. Just what I’ve come to expect on a regular basis from a system that has delivered over and over again for almost half a century.
It used to get me restricted, banned and cast adrift, but thanks to Betfair that will never happen again!
